Ode to Pink Pearl

by Bill Flury

This month we have something special for you… a little break from everyday rigors! In this cute, nostalgic and light-hearted poem, Bill Flury celebrates the virtues of his favorite piece of office stationery. Enjoy!

Ode to Pink Pearl
by Bill Flury, 1993

I’ve always been in love,
With a wonderful girl,
A sweetheart since childhood,
Fabulosita, Pink Pearl.

A fixture in my school box,
And later in my pack,
My lovely Pink Pearl,
I really need you back.

You helped me on tests,
With a twist and a swirl,
Wiping out the wrong answers,
What a wonderful girl!

You ate up graffiti,
Like a hungry shark,
Leaving clear space behind you –
No trace of a mark.

Now, with computers,
We erase with a mouse,
And there’s no more Pink Pearl
Anywhere in our house.

We’ve forgotten about you,
Fixing slips without fail;
How when we were writing,
You always saved our tale.

I miss you deeply my former companion,
Faithful friend and best girl.
Could life’s miscalculations
Be rubbed out by Pink Pearl?

Bill, Peter’s Physics professor at the Naval Academy wrote a piece called “Chalk Talk.” saying this was the best way to teach. How can a computer teach you anything. It can maybe instruct or entertain, but to really learn anything, there has to be some “give and take.” Pink Pearl memory: wiping away the eraser detritus, much more satisfying than back-spacing, and less troublesome.
